“Effects of Nd:YAG laser irradation on tempera paints: influence of pulse duration” by Laura Andrés-Herguedas

Also during the 5th TechnoHeritage International Congress, another contribution was an oral presentation presented by Laura Andrés-Herguedas. Within the topic “New materials and technologies for Cultural Heritage”, she shared part of the findings from a study carried out between the University of Vigo and our colleagues from the Centro per la Conservazione ed il Restauro dei Beni Culturali “La Venaria Reale” (Turin, Italy).

On Friday 27th she presented the work entitled “Effects of Nd:YAG laser irradiation on tempera paints: influence of pulse duration”. The irradiation of the pigment and tempera mock-ups were carried out by the laser specialist Francesca Zenucchini. The evaluation and characterization of the pigments was carried out between the scientific laboratories of the centre by PhDs Chiara Ricci, Chiara Avataneo, Anna Piccirillo and Federica Pozzi, and by the University of Vigo.

The interest of this study lies in kwon whether the pulse duration of a laser plays a crucial role in the irradiation of pigment and tempera mock-ups. For that purpose, three pulsed Nd:YAG lasers were selected: Short Free Running, Long Q-Switch and Q-Switch. The findings have an impact on how best to optimize laser cleaning procedures used in the field of conservation.
